Biographies of early medieval English women

Fifteenth-century Dutch panel painting of Count Baldwin and Queen JudithJudith: The First Crowned and Anointed Queen of Wessex... At Twelve Years Old

My aim with my newsletter is to eventually have written a biography of every single woman we know existed in England between roughly 500 and 1100: Wobbuffet posts historian Florence H R Scott's excellent and accessible "Ælfgif-who?" collection, with links to each entry so far.

Taming the beast

Microsoft Outlook logo

I recently created a rule that sends email to the Clutter folder if it has the text "unsubscribe" in the email body. It is literally the best. I look once a week to make sure there's nothing I actually want to deal with, otherwise trash it all. Is It Over Yet?

Currently popular on Mefi: Best Practices for Outlook, time management tips for "the behemoth of O365." A guide from the product team that created Microsoft Outlook, plus Mefites share their own hacks.

America hating fat Black women — it’s just part of life. It’s in the culture. It’s in the health-care system. You see it in Hollywood, you see it in sports. You don’t have to look around very hard. misskaz posts a superb personal essay by tennis pro Taylor Townsend.

So Touching!

The satisfying resistance of a well-designed knob, the almost imperceptible click of the needle in a VU meter, the tapping of keys, the gentle whirring of reels and discs… simple pleasures.

We can't put our finger on exactly why, but we're feeling chavenet's new post, The Tactile Beauty of Buttons, Meters, Knobs and Dials. 🔘

Book Recs vs Book Wrecks

Black Sheep Meets White SheepBlack Sheep Meets White Sheep by Ionics (cc by)

In Ask Metafilter, kristi is seeking likable characters, good writing, humor. Please recommend all your well-written, likeable characters. Humor appreciated. Plot optional, while kingdead commands, Bring me the unlikeable characters! I want to read books with unhappy endings, angst and drama, body horror, miserable relationships, etc. Absolutely no redemption! If the writing is experimental, all the better.

popular monsters

pale and scary screaming people with empty eyes in dim eerie lighting jammed up against a window protesting masksThat Ohio protest photo that looked like a zombie movie, by Joshua A. Bickel, via The Washington Post -- and darkstar

Mefites have their own ideas about what sorts of horror films would fit the current zeitgeist, from the Second Monster, to bacon-enraged intestine-slurping aliens to posh Freddy Krueger (requires billionairity), to how difficult it is to clean a bathroom when evil forces keep messing things up again, plus stories! ... And opinions! Many Opinions!
