In vain have I struggled

Book cover of Pride and Prejudice showing a handsome dark haired man in his shirtsleeves holding a terrified woman wearing what appears to be an opera cape and a nondescript, but definitely not Edwardian, plain shirtwaist style dress. While he stares hungrily at her chest, the woman looks out to her left at whatever ghastly thing she seems to see approaching. There is what looks to be a haunted gothic gazebo in the background.Mr. Darcy and Miss Bennet are apparently not on the same page

Mefites discuss the worst Jane Austen covers ever.

"understanding data, like, fractally"

I'm aware that my saying all of this is like when Ollivander referred to Voldemort as "Terrible, but great." But I think it's important, on some level, to understand that Facebook wasn't a fluke: Metafilter member Tom Hanks Cannot Be Trusted on witnessing the rise of Facebook, its early underestimation by most tech folk, and why it "was a radically different beast than Livejournal, MySpace, and anything else remotely adjacent to the scene"

... what ends up happening is you need more and more people to manage smaller and smaller things ... Wow! Very interesting insider comment from wooh on the scale challenges and other issues that have steered the engineering side of Twitter.

"Language justice is critically important for health care, legal services, workplace safety, and education": a great member-sponsored post and interesting thread from jessamyn. Sponsored posts are helping with the current, vital fundraising effort, and you can follow these posts on the blue here. (Also, btw: What's metafilter's second language?)

Highlighting the best bits from the MetaFilter universe

MetaFilter started as a community weblog in 1999, later added question and answers, then music by members, jobs, projects by members, a podcast, and finally an area dedicated to meetups.
