Children of the Ice Age

A depiction of 4 Ice Age children dressed in skins and furs. One of the taller ones wears a mask and what looks like a bearskin and headpiece, while the other older child carries a wooden spear. In the background, the huge, bleached skull bone and tusk of a giant animal.Image via Aeon Magazine

"For more than 200 years, children have been neglected by archaeologists. It was part of a disciplinary bias towards adult men in archaeological interpretations. This began to change in the 1970s and ’80s with the rise of feminist archaeology and the archaeology of gender..." cgc373 posted Aeon Magazine's article by April Nowell.

"How, really, ought Chirin to live?"

detail from video cover showing Chirin as a young innocent lamb

Chirin’s Bell is like if, instead of Bambi being raised by his father after the death of his mother, he sought out the hunters who killed his mother and insisted they teach him how to use a gun: interesting post from J.K. Seazer on an unusual children's book (and film), plus a great analysis of the work.

Show us the love

Hold It In Your HandsHold It In Your Hands by B Tal (cc by-nc)

Besides saying 'I love you,' were there things that your family (or other important adults in your life) did to show you that you were loved and appreciated?

How were you shown you were loved as a kid?

Poems for shy people in love

ShyShy by akageorge (cc by-nc-nd)

In Ask Metafilter, beijingbrown asks about "poems or lines of poetry about love that is awkward, hesitant and quiet - filled with silences and mis-timings" ... while in other quests for words and sounds about feelings, thoughts and things, switcheroo seeks "songs that pick me up and make me want to live again after a long day of work," picklenickle is looking for good songs with lyrics that are hella gay, and slidell searches for children's rhymes and songs that are free of ghastly, scary, and offensive things.

Not waving but drowning

Hands upHands up by vapour trail (cc by-nd)

The hardest (oddest?) part? You learn that a fairly likely outcome of your attempt to rescue a conscious non-swimmer is that you will be attacked, and so you have to learn underwater combat tactics, so that you won't be drowned the first time you try to carry out a rescue.

infinite intimation and other former lifeguards comment in the Spot the Drowning Child thread, while some survivors remember. Plus, Mefi's worst (imaginary) lifeguard, racial swimming disparity / swimming pool discrimination, dreaming underwater, and PS: Please don't throw babies in pools.
