the insidiousness of conservative talk radio
"it isn't nearly as simple as being told what to think. The best way to impregnate ... an idea into someone's mind is to tell them to think for themselves, and then offer "facts" that lead them to what becomes an unavoidable conclusion."

Everything you wanted to know about the Facebook IPO

DSCN1753DSCN1753 by Perpetualtourist2000 (cc by)

In an Ask MetaFilter question about short term buying of Facebook stock around the IPO, member jeb lays out the crazy world of stock market IPOs, how they function, and why you'll probably pay more than the opening price.

The way the IPO business works is…sort of corrupt, to varying degrees. It's definitely not a good place for the individual investor. Basically what happens is this...

Moon Patrol! Masters of the moon!

Everybody's been talking about the moon, but what about the Moon Patrol? They get up at noon!

If that's not enough goofy space-related music from mefite erikgrande (with some help from Uncle Jimmy), you might also check out the improvised and thoroughly ridiculous 9 minute Star Wars blues jam, Is Everything OK?

How Bird Flu transmission really works

Life on a Grain of Sand 4Life on a Grain of Sand 4 by adonofrio (cc by)

MeFi member Osrinith drops some science (ha!) on a recent study that looked at mutations to change bird flu into something humans could contract didn't work out in the way we thought it might, and how ultimately transmission likely happened through natural means:

What this paper shows is something that's been known for a long time in term of organism adaptation: we can't out-science Nature (yet). So if you were a bio-terrorist, and all you cared about was making the virus deadly, and didn't care anything about how it works, then all you'd have to do is buy some ferrets and a sick chicken.

I'll Be Seeing Her Tonight, by fingers_of_fire

Metafilter musician fingers_of_fire (aka Alec Berlin) has been posting some great stuff to Metafilter Music lately, from his new album Innocent Explanations. It's fun, well-produced stuff with a lot of rocky jangle to it, and this track, I'll Be Seeing Her Tonight, is a pretty darned good example of what he's been up to.

Highlighting the best bits from the MetaFilter universe

MetaFilter started as a community weblog in 1999, later added question and answers, then music by members, jobs, projects by members, a podcast, and finally an area dedicated to meetups.
